Abergeldie Estate
Abergeldie lies on the River Dee in Royal Deeside, beside Balmoral. The estate was bought with a purpose beyond hospitality: to bring employment back to this part of Aberdeenshire and to preserve family life, tradition and community. Guests who stay are stepping into that intent, among people who live and work on the land.
It revives a real Highland tradition. For generations, the same families returned to the same sporting estate each year, greeted by the same faces, until the place became theirs in every way but the deed. Abergeldie is being built for guests who come back on purpose.
Our approach
Abergeldie is the first project to bring both sides of Maven together in full, and we are shaping the estate from the beginning: its brand, its guests, the stay itself and how it reaches the market.
We started by asking what could be true of Abergeldie and of nowhere else. Having studied seventeen comparable estates across Scotland and England, we found that even at the highest prices the experience is transactional: book, stay, leave. None is designed around the guest returning. That became the position: a Highland estate you belong to, not a place you hire.
Four ideas carry it through:
- People: the estate is run by a team who call Abergeldie home, so that returning families are met by the same faces each year.
- Choice: guests build their own stay. A private chef for every meal or none, a full larder and complete privacy, or dinner they have caught themselves.
- Made here: furniture, linen and textiles come from Scottish makers, with provenance that can be seen.
- Belonging: the same cottage, the same ghillie and the same week each year, with every family’s preferences remembered.
The aim is a feeling more than a list of features. The test of a stay is how guests were made to feel: recognised, connected and part of something.
That thinking now guides everything else, from the product and pricing to the interiors, where we are advising on styling and specifying lighting and AV that add to the experience without intruding on it. [Tom to add notes on lighting and AV.] We are also creating the estate’s identity, photography and first website, and once it opens we will represent Abergeldie commercially, introducing it to our own network and managing enquiries and bookings on its behalf.
